Hedges’ 2-run HR paves way to sweep vs. M’s
The Padres managed just four hits off Mariners starter Wade LeBlanc, but two swings produced four runs. Austin Hedges provided an early lead for San Diego starter Joey Lucchesi via a two-run homer in the second, and Hunter Renfroe padded the cushion with a two-run shot in the fifth. Seattle got three runs back in the bottom of the frame, with Nelson Cruz capping the scoring with a solo drive to the upper deck — which also produced his 1,000th career RBI. The Padres’ bullpen shut down the Mariners, striking out nine straight batters from the sixth to the eighth, until Kyle Seager led off the ninth with a solo home run. Kirby Yates bounced back to slam the door and secure a two-game sweep for San Diego.
