Lowrie leads way as A’s close division gap
Not long after the Mariners pulled off a four-game road sweep of the first-place Astros on Sunday, the A’s overcame a late-inning scare to close out a series-clinching victory in Anaheim and pull within 2 1/2 games of the division lead. Jed Lowrie collected his 1,000th career hit with a double in the first inning and added a two-run homer, his 18th, extending his career-high. Francisco Arcia clobbered his third homer in his 11th Major League game, bringing his slugging percentage to .533. Both teams’ bullpens struggled as 14 pitchers saw time on the mound, but Blake Treinen quelled the Angels’ late rally with a perfect ninth to earn his 30th save.
