Matheny likely to use Wacha in emergency, long relief

While manager Mike Matheny still isn’t certain how he’ll deploy starter-turned- reliever Michael Wacha this postseason, he does not intend to shake up his late-inning relief blueprint to force him into that mix. That means Wacha will most likely be used in one of two ways — to help bail out a starter who can’t get the team through the fifth inning or as a long reliever in a game that extends into extra innings.
